SEA ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

SEA Arquitectos is an architecture studio in A Coruña built around a clear idea: to design spaces that work well and, at the same time, are lived intensely. Starting from maximum functionality, each project is developed by thinking about what the user perceives through the five senses in order to achieve an architectural experience that is precise, human, and enduring.

Our work focuses on contemporary architecture, housing, refurbishment, and interior design. We understand each commission as a specific response to the place, the client’s way of life, and the atmosphere that architecture should create. We do not look for repeated formulas, but for well-considered, coherent solutions capable of standing the test of time.

What defines us

We are interested in architecture that is sober, sensitive, and well built. Architecture grounded in functionality, but not limited to technical performance; architecture that incorporates emotion, perception, and character. That is why we work carefully with natural light, proportions, the texture of materials, the relationship with nature, and the way each space supports everyday life.

This approach allows us to develop residential and refurbishment projects with a soul of its own, always adapted to the specific needs of each commission. If you want to see how this way of working takes shape, you can explore our Selected or browse the All projects list.

Carlos Graña

Architect and master's graduate from the universities of A Coruña and Stuttgart. After working in the USA, Germany, and several studios in Spain, and collaborating in India with Balkrishna Doshi —2018 Pritzker Prize laureate—, he founded SEA Arquitectos in A Coruña. Currently a doctoral candidate in Swiss architecture, he combines professional practice with teaching; he has been coordinator of the Master's in Wood Design and Construction at Cesuga and has taught at ETSAC and the IUAV in Venice.

How do we work

We are architects and we advocate an interdisciplinary way of working in which complementary knowledge allows us to go further. Architects, urban planners, engineers and specialists collaborate to achieve a common goal: the best possible architecture for each context.

A large part of architecture is conceived only to be seen. At SEA, we believe it should also be felt: in light, materiality, temperature, scale, and in the relationship between inside and outside. Each project seeks a specific atmosphere, a distinct soul for each client, and that goal guides decisions from the initial idea to the final detail.

New Build

We approach each new-build project as a response to its maximum functionality. Our methodology balances technical and planning rigor with architecture conceived for the five senses, where natural light and materiality turn each home into an experience. We approach every project through a deep relationship with the history, identity, and landscape of its place.

Refurbishment

Our experience in interventions on architectural heritage ranges from small refurbishment works in urban apartments or traditional homes to the full restoration of major buildings such as the emblematic Casa Escariz or the Oceanographic Centre of A Coruña. We adapt architecture to its new needs with the utmost respect for built history.

Housing

Through the design of numerous single-family homes, we explore domestic architecture that responds genuinely to each person’s way of living. We study orientation and climate in detail in order to protect the home. Through functional layouts, we organize spaces so that morning sun bathes the bedrooms and afternoon radiation fills the day areas.

Interior design

We understand interior space as an inseparable part of architecture and sensory perception. Our experience collaborating with Vincent Van Duysen has given us the knowledge to approach residential projects through sensitivity to material. We design the atmosphere of each room as a whole, controlling acoustic comfort, lighting, and the use of color to evoke sensations. Every detail is drawn to accompany each moment of the day.

Expert Reports

The technical rigor we apply during the design phase and site supervision gives us the expertise required to analyze complex building pathologies and construction disputes. We thoroughly assess structural failures, dampness, material deficiencies, and execution problems, providing an objective diagnosis based on common sense and the real physical behavior of buildings. This knowledge allows us to issue clear and robust expert reports, giving our clients the essential technical and legal support needed to guarantee the safety of their spaces and resolve disputes with maximum precision.

Energy Performance Certificates

We evaluate and certify building performance under demanding energy-saving criteria inspired by the Passivhaus standard and Central European efficiency. We integrate active and passive energy systems and high-performance insulation that allow architecture to breathe naturally. The combination of these strategies allows us to design efficiently. We seek maximum indoor comfort and genuine consumption optimization.

Hotel Projects

With more than 8,000 m built and thanks to our experience working with Accor, Europe’s leading hotel chain, we have the knowledge to develop any project in this sector. The comprehensive work carried out with the Mercure Lugo hotel and with the Ibis Budget chain gives us a very broad and professional understanding of the sector. We provide integrated management of the entire process, from legal, planning, and tourism matters to the architectural project, interior design project, and site supervision.

Laboratories

With more than 3,000 m built and more than 5,000 m designed, we have the technical expertise to develop highly complex laboratory spaces. Our experience as experts in this sector allows us to approach each project comprehensively, ensuring that every technical element is positioned in detail to optimize workflow.
